Working as a Doctor in Australia
Work where you want! As a national recruitment and placement locum agency, we can
place you anywhere in Australia as long as you meet the criteria.
You will need to meet immigration, visa and medical registration requirements. There
are several pathways for OTD's to meet these requirements which can be checked on
the Australian Government’s Dept of Health & Ageing website - www.doctorconnect.gov.au
Before applying with Australian Medical Placements, please ensure that you have
read and understood the requirements. Otherwise, we are not able to help you.
In most cases, an Overseas Trained Doctor looking to work in Australia is required
to meet the basic requirements listed below:
Satisfy Australian Medical Council (AMC) English language proficiency requirements.
General Practitioners (GPs/family physicians) must pass both the theory & clinical
components of the AMC.
Hospital Doctors (non-specialists) must meet the specific registration requirements
of the Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Specialists must apply to
the relevant Specialist Medical College for recognition as a specialist through
the AMC.
Apply for a visa and pass all necessary police & medical checks.
Identify an appropriate job. (Usually required to be an Area of Need position).
Apply with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) for medical
registration.
Obtain medical indemnity cover in Australia.
Further explanation and clarification on these requirements can be found on www.doctorconnect.gov.au
Overseas Trained Doctors—GP's
You may be eligible for full or limited medical registration in Australia. We will
be able to advise you of which type of registration will be most applicable and
useful to you.
Doctors eligible for full medical registration are:
OTDs who have passed the AMC examination and have completed a period of supervised
training in Australia approved by Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency
(AHPRA) where the doctor has also met the English proficiency requirements; or
Doctors who hold any of the following qualifications may be eligible for the FRACGP
without further training or formal examination of time requirements; Doctors with
MRCGP and (JCPTGP) UK; or
Doctors who hold CFPC; or
Doctors with FRNZGP
If you hold one of these qualifications you may be able to obtain medical registration
to work independently in general practice. It is important to check with the Australian
Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) first. We can advise you on these
requirements.
Overseas Trained Doctors - Hospital Positions
The public hospital system in Australia is excellent and provides many opportunities
for overseas trained doctors (OTDs) wishing to work in Australia - particularly
for those OTDs not yet able to gain full medical registration or recognition of
their qualifications as a general practitioner (GP/family physician) or specialist.
There are also many opportunities for those who wish to work in Australia temporarily
or who are seeking a postgraduate (occupational) training position. We have many
positions available for doctors who meet the OTD requirements as detailed on the
Australian Government website www.doctorconnect.gov.au
